Three Albion College student-athletes were named Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Players of the Week in their respective sports in the wake of their performances Sept. 7.
Mike Vandermus, a senior cornerback from Harbor Springs, was named the Defensive Player of the Week in football after stripping the ball from a Defiance receiver and returning the fumble 33 yards for a touchdown in Albion’s 32-29 victory. An all-MIAA first team pick last season, Vandermus was credited with six solo and four assisted tackles in the week one contest. Albion continues non-league play this Saturday with a road trip to Wheaton (Ill.) College.
“Mike was a first team all-league pick last season, and he’s playing even better at this point of the season,” Albion head football coach Craig Rundle said. “Mike’s strip was really big considering we had just scored on the previous play (a 10-yard run by Darrin Williams).”
Paul Lewis and Jessica Shaw were named the MIAA Cross Country Runners of the Week.
Lewis, a senior from Albion, finished a strong third in 25:42 as the Britons won the Great Lakes Colleges Association meet and placed third among 12 teams in the Ohio Wesleyan Invitational. Lewis’ time was his best ever in the GLCA meet. A three-time competitor in the NCAA Division III Championship, Lewis is being honored as Runner of the Week for the third time in his career.
Shaw, a first-year student from Allegan, placed fifth in leading Albion to a fourth-place finish among 11 teams at the Ohio Wesleyan Invitational. She posted a time of 19:17.3, the second-fastest ever by a Briton runner on the OWU course.
The Albion cross country teams will drive to East Lansing Friday to compete in the Auto-Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational.
