ALBION – The officials ruled Greg Silverthorn's tip-in beat the final buzzer as Alma College escaped Kresge Gymnasium with a 56-55 victory over Albion College in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association men's basketball action.
Chris Hutton and Leonard Wernette-Leff, two seniors playing in their final game at Kresge Gymnasium, rallied Albion from a 50-42 deficit. Hutton buried a 3-point shot and Wernette-Leff scored six consecutive points as the Britons led 55-52 with 58 seconds left.
The Britons couldn't hang on, as Dustin DeShais' basket with 37 seconds closed the gap to a point. Alma got the last possession after Albion misfired on the front end of a 1-and-1 from the line. Albion's inability to cash in at the line – the Britons were 10 of 17 for 59 percent – and grab a rebound at the end proved to be the difference.
Alma started with a 8-0 run, but Albion responded with the game's next eight points.
Neither team was able to break away for a large lead the remainder of the first half, but it was Alma who controlled a 33-27 lead going into the break.
A 3-pointer by Hutton and two baskets from Mike Smith brought the Britons within two points early in the second half.
Alma held a steady lead for much of the half, but could never stretch the lead to double digits.
DJ Beckman led the Scots with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 3 steals.
Hutton was the leading scorer for Albion with 13. Smith had 11 points and 9 rebounds, while Wernette-Leff added 9 points.
Albion will play its final game of the season this Saturday at Adrian College.
