GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Albion College men's golf team may look back at Monday and think about what might have been. Looking to inch closer to fourth in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association standings, the Britons produced a team score of 313 to finish sixth in the league jamboree today at Watermark Country Club.
Producing their second-best round of the year, the Britons still lost ground to Trine University for that coveted fourth position. The Thunder shot a 307 to move further ahead of the Britons.
"We're going to go into the final two rounds just trying to get the best rounds out of everyone. We had good rounds today, but a few silly things cost us – a small accidental rules violation by one of my guys cost an important two shots for example," Head Coach Jordan McArleton said.
With four golfers scoring per team, the difference between the Britons' sixth place finish Monday and second place was an average of 2 ½ strokes per player.
Justin Leeds led the team today with a 76 which tied him for 11th on the leaderboard and also one shot short of his season best which came at Zollner Golf Course earlier in the season. Jake Hinkle also produced a fine round today with a 78, which is just one higher than his season average.
The low round of the day today were 71s by Hope's Winton Munch and Trine's Grant Brettnacher.
"So each round we've left shots on the table. We're capable easily of fifth, and we're going to shoot for fourth. We play with Adrian and Trine, who are ahead of us in the standings, so we'll just try to beat the guys in our group and let it take care of itself."
The season comes to an end Oct. 7-8 when the league teams meet in Battle Creek for the 36-hole fall finale.
