Albion College is celebrating Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Player of the Week selections in men's lacrosse for the second week in a row. Dan Genord, a senior from Ann Arbor who prepped at Gabriel Richard High School, was named the league's Offensive Player of the Week, and Jeff Irish, a sophomore from Milford who prepped at Detroit Catholic Central High School, was named the Defensive Player of the Week in the wake of the Britons' 10-9 victory over Kenyon College on Feb. 16.
Genord finished the day with three goals and an assist. Albion Coach Jake DeCola said Genord had two outstanding goals, one where he dove to redirect a loose ball in front of the crease and another where he caught the rebound off Taylor Zuke's shot in mid-air.
Irish stabilized a defensive unit that was perfect on its 20 clearing opportunities and prevented Kenyon from scoring on five extra-man opportunities. He also caused a critical turnover late in the game.
"Jeff put a lot of pressure on Kenyon's attack group," DeCola said. "His leadership was outstanding."
Albion, 1-1 on the young season, continues non-league play Saturday when it challenges Defiance College at the Ultimate Soccer Arena in Pontiac.
