ALBION, Mich. – Albion College launched a challenging March schedule Saturday with a 8-5 victory over Augustana College in non-league men's lacrosse action.
Zach Hubbell scored twice in a 43-second span as Albion forged a 3-3 tie at the end of the first quarter.
Albion controlled the contest for the final 45 minutes, outshooting Augustana, 28-16, over the final three quarters. Dylan Neal and Kevin O'Grady produced second-quarter goals as Albion led 5-3 at halftime.
Albion built a three-goal lead early in the third when Cameron Braun finished a man-advantage goal. The Britons kept the comfortable three-goal margin as Alexander Dziewit scored in the third and Stephen Treppa produced his second tally of the day with six minutes remaining.
Treppa was credited with a team-high seven shots, and Dziewit and Neal, both midfielders who chipped in with assists, ripped six shots apiece.
"Any of our six midfielders can score in bunches on any given day," Albion Head Coach Jake DeCola said. "Stephen is sharing and shooting the ball real well."
Scott Davis scored twice and Alex Crescenti tacked on a goal and an assist for Augustana, but Albion goalkeeper Kyle Formczyk made eight saves, but some of those came of critical times.
"We held a good Augustana team to a low number of goals," DeCola said. "The defense in front of Kyle was good."
Albion, now 3-1 on the young season, will play its next four contests on the road, starting with a Wednesday date at Oberlin College.
"We set the schedule to challenge our guys as preparation for Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association competition," DeCola said. "Every game could go either way. We have to be ready to play a strong game every time."
