Overtime Loss Could Prove To Be Launching Point

ADA, Ohio – The Albion College men's soccer team didn't travel Friday to achieve a moral victory, however, the Britons can build on a 3-2 overtime loss to eighth-ranked Ohio Northern University.

Despite a challenging week that had some members joining the team at the field after students were sent home Wednesday in the wake of a microburst that left campus without power, Albion took leads of 1-0 and 2-1. Charles Micunek headed in a corner kick in the 53rd minute and Kyle Alsheskie tacked on his second goal of the season with 10 minutes left in regulation.

Albion withstood tremendous pressure from Ohio Northern after Alsheskie's goal as the Polar Bears came away empty on three corner kicks. Ohio Northern finished the fourth opportunity from the corner with Stephen Perkins getting his head on the ball for the equalizer.

Albion goalkeeper Andrew Bobowski stopped the only shot he faced in the first overtime period and three other Ohio Northern shots went off target. Albion mounted some pressure, too, as Kurt Miller launched a pair of corner kicks.

Ohio Northern ended the match three minutes into the second overtime when Ryan Prescott tallied his third goal of the season.

Albion was credited with eight shots in the contest. Micunek and Mike Tolkacz finished with two shots apiece.

Albion will take a 2-3 record into its Sept. 17 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opener against Olivet College. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at Alumni Field.
