Men's Soccer Falls In Home Opener

ALBION, Mich. – Trine University spoiled the Albion College men's soccer team's home debut Saturday afternoon by handing the Britons a 2-1 setback.

It is the first loss of the season for the Britons, who fell to 4-1-1 overall and 1-1 against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rivals.

Aaron Smit lifted the Britons to a 1-1 tie when he scored his first goal of the season midway through the first half. Erik Vanfossen was credited with the assist on the play.

The Albion fans were still buzzing when Trine was awarded a penalty kick 14 seconds after the Smit goal. Albion goalkeeper Maximilian Loria got a hand on the penalty kick by Tristen Ortiz, but the shot found the back of the net for the winning score.

Albion had twice as many shots, 20-10, as Trine. Smit took four shots, and Brady Brown and Christian Hurtado were credited with three apiece.

Albion will play at home again Tuesday when it challenges Hope College. Kickoff is set for 7 o'clock at the Davis Athletic Complex.
