A pair of Albion College student-athletes who gained all-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association status in their respective sports have been recognized as the Briton Athletes of the Week as selected by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Swimmer Brian Fiorillo, a junior from Southgate, was selected as the men's athlete of the week after qualifying for the NCAA Division III Championships in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events. The MIAA's most valuable swimmer, Fiorillo finished the league championship meet with five gold medals. He won individual MIAA championships in the 50-, 100-, and 200-yard freestyle events, and he was a member of the winning 400 and 800 freestyle relay teams.
"My favorite thing about swimming is the challenge of improving," Fiorillo said. "I was pleased with dropping my time in all of my events at the MIAA Championships."
Brett de Bear, a junior from Plymouth, was placed on the all-MIAA second team in women's basketball. She turned in one of the finest seasons ever recorded by an Albion women's basketball player by scoring 406 points, the fourth-highest single-season total in school history. Her scoring average was supported by an uncanny ability to get to the free throw line where she converted 85 of 109 attempts. Her 78 percent accuracy from the charity stripe was sixth-best in the MIAA.
"My favorite thing about basketball is the team," de Bear said. "It's the friends you make and the way you learn the ability to play with them."
