'He Clearly Separated Himself From The Rest Of The MIAA'

Gerardo Huidobro left the A3 Carthage College Classic with the top performance of the season in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association in five individual events, and he was rewarded Monday by being named the league's Athlete of the Week in men's swimming and diving.

An Albion College sophomore from Peru, Huidobro achieved school records and NCAA Division III 'B' qualifying times in the breaststroke events with times of 56.60 seconds in the 100-yard race and 2:03.81 at 200 yards.

He also set MIAA season best performances in the 200 butterfly (1:53.98), 500 freestyle (4:39.33) and 1,650 freestyle (16:37.46).

"Huidobro clearly separated himself from the rest of the MIAA this weekend as the most talented, willing and all around swimmer in our conference," Albion Head Coach Jake Taber said. "No other swimmer (or diver) in the MIAA has posted the best performance in the league in more than two events, Huidobro has done so in five. Unfortunately do to entry limits this weekend he was unable to swim either individual medley relay or he may have posted two more top times in the league."

Taber went on to note Huidobro is the league's top returner in the 400 IM where he posted a 'B' qualifying time last year.

Albion student-athletes are idle this week to concentrate on fall semester final examinations. The Britons next meet is a Jan. 3 date at Southwestern University in San Antonio, Texas.
