HOLLAND, Mich. – Albion had the top three men's runners in the Vanderbilt Invitational Saturday, but the 103-second gap between the third and fourth runner kept the Britons from winning the team competition.
Paul Lewis, a junior from Albion, and Matt Melvin, a senior from Bangor, ran step-for-step the entire way and they finished with identical times of 26 minutes, 15 seconds. Mitchell Klingler, a junior from Coldwater, was the third runner to reach the finish line at 26:22. Bradley Baker (28:05) and Jon Forsyth (28:17) rounded out Albion's top five.
"It was a nice meet after three runners," Coach Hayden Smith said. "The challenge this year is to close the gap from one to five, but we have potential."
Hope College edged Albion in the team standings, 39-41. Cornerstone University was third with a total of 65 and Muskegon Community College finished with a total of 91.
