CLEVELAND, Ohio – Albion College defeated Case Western Reserve University and John Carroll University, teams ranked in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Association's Division III preseason Great Lakes regional rankings, to win the Sudeck Sundown Classic.
Albion came into the meet ranked seventh in the USTFCCCA's preseason regional survey.
Andrew Bill, Andrew Wittland, Kiehl Smith and Adam Ditri finished among the top seven runners. Albion's total score of 27 was nine lower than Case Western, ranked fifth in the preseason regional survey, and 40 lower than John Carroll, ranked 10th.
Bill, a sophomore who represented Albion as an individual in the NCAA Division III Championships last year, averaged 5:09 per mile to surge past the field. He completed the 6K course in 19:12.3.
"The original plan was to go with Case Western's top runner, but he wasn't in the race so I took over," Bill said. "The team performance was spectacular. It will build morale and confidence for the team."
Wittland and Smith were separated by just four seconds at the finish. Wittland finished third, reaching the finish in 19:35, while Smith was fifth in 19:39.
Ditri was seventh, reaching the finish in 19:52.6, and Mark Klingel completed Albion's top five, finishing 11th in 20:01.
Next up for Albion is a Sept. 15 date in the Spartan Invitational at the Forest Akers East Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich.
