The Albion College men's cross country team jumped to No. 3 in the first Great Lakes regional ranking released Tuesday by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Albion, ranked seventh in the preseason survey, jumped four places based on its performance in the Sudeck Sundown Classic Sept. 1. Andrew Bill, Andrew Wittland, Kiehl Smith and Adam Ditri finished among the top seven runners as the Britons defeated the regional ranked teams from Case Western Reserve University and John Carroll University.
Three Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association squads are among the top five teams in the region, according to the ranking. Calvin College is first and Trine University checks in at No. 5 after being unranked in the preseason.
While the Britons are proud of what they accomplished in the season-opening meet, Coach Derick Lawrence says his team is focused on making daily improvement over the course of the season.
"It's exciting to be recognized in the rankings by our regional poll coordinators," Lawrence said. "Our team motto is 'Relentless Pursuit of Excellence', so our primary focus is on what we can accomplish at the present moment each and every day in order to get closer to achieving our ultimate goal. The atmosphere each day at practice is very positive and supportive and everyone wants to do everything they can to get better. We are on the right path."
Albion returns to competition Friday when it travels to East Lansing, Mich., for the Spartan Invitational.
