Albion College multi-event athlete Kristin Nelson was named the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association's Field Athlete of the Week in the wake of her performance in the March 23 Polar Bear Invitational at Indiana Wesleyan University, league publicist Greg Chandler announced Tuesday afternoon.
Nelson, a senior from Iron Mountain, tied her own school record in the triple jump with a leap of 36' 3" to win the event. She also finished second in the long jump with an effort of 16' 10 ½", fourth in the 100-meter hurdles, and fifth in the javelin throw.
"Both of jumping events were contested early in the meet when it was really cold," Albion Coach Lance Coleman said. "Kristin competed real well despite less than favorable conditions for a sprinter or jumper.
"Kristin had a nice throw in the javelin late in the preliminaries to get her in the finals," Coleman added. "She found her groove in the finals and had the best series of her brief javelin career. I hope it was a breakthrough performance to help her find some consistency."
Nelson is expected to compete in the heptathlon for the first time in her career this weekend when she travels to Saint Louis, Mo., for an invitational at Washington University.
