MEADVILLE, Pa. – Albion College took advantage of 23 Allegheny College attack errors in the odd-numbered sets to gain a five-set (25-15, 21-25, 25-23, 27-29, 15-12) victory on the opening night of the Gator Invitational. The Britons earned another five-set victory when they rallied from two sets down to top Buffalo State (19-25, 13-25, 25-19, 25-18, 15-13).
The first four points Albion scored in the fifth set came from Allegheny attack errors. Caitlin McClorey and Lauren Outwater produced kills on consecutive points as the Britons gained an 8-4 lead. Jayln Ingalls knocked down a solo block as Albion maintained the four-point advantage at 10-6, and Erin Romph served up an ace to increase the margin to five at 12-7. Allegheny rallied to cut the Albion lead to 13-12, but Halle Thom slammed a kill and the match ended on an Allegheny attack error.
Albion took the early lead in the match by ripping off a bunch of four-point rallies in the first set. Kristen Beyer served up three aces and McClorey added a couple of kills.
Albion erased a 4-0 deficit in the third set as Allegheny attack errors on consecutive points and kilsl by Thom, Stephanie Thurner and Danielle Dale evened the score at 5. The Gators scored consecutive points to cut Albion's lead to 24-23, but Thom finished the set with a kill.
Thom finished the day with 34 kills, including 18 kills against Allegheny. McClorey knocked down 12 kills in 27 attacks and Ingalls produced nine kills and two blocks.
Ingalls contributed 13 kills with no errors against Buffalo State.
Albion's Saturday schedule in the Gator Invitational features matches against Thiel (Pa.) and Bluffton (Ohio).
