ALMA, Mich. – Albion College overcame a 6-1 deficit to win the first set, but the Britons could not carry the momentum in a four set loss (22-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-23) to Alma College.
Albion ripped off nine consecutive points – eight with Lauren Outwater serving – as Albion surged to a 16-10 lead in the first set. A Marie Pregenzer block Albion on serve and she terminated the next point.
Alma scored five in a row to cut the margin to 22-20, but attack errors kept Albion in the lead and Pregenzer terminated the final point.
Madison Smith blocked a Taylor Rosenthal attack and she terminated a point to lead Alma on a five point run that put the Scots in control of the second set. Pregenzer assisted on blocks on consecutive points as Albion pulled within one, 19-18, but Katie Bush extinguished the rally with a kill and a block assist.
Dakota Pelach had a block and a kill as Alma scored five in a row in building an 8-4 lead in the third set and the Scots never trailed.
Pregenzer and Outwater terminated points and a bad set by the Scots gave Albion a 7-4 lead in the fourth. Alma rallied to win seven of the next nine points to take an 11-9 lead. Jessica Konieczny and Stephanie Thurner combined on a block as Albion tied the score at 22, but a service error and a Pelach kill pushed Alma to match point.
Outwater and Pregenzer finished with nine kills apiece for Albion. Outwater also collected 15 digs. Ami Milligan added a double-double of 35 assists and 16 digs.
Alma's Kendall Sells led all players with 11 kills. Pelach and Georgia Miller finished with 10 kills apiece.
Albion (13-10 overall and 3-8 against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rivals) returns home Tuesday, Oct. 18 for a league match against the nationally ranked team from Hope College. The first serve is set for 6:30 p.m. inside Kresge Gymnasium.
