Volleyball Finishes MIAA Rival In Five Sets

ALBION, Mich. – Finishing is one of the core values the Albion College volleyball team is working to develop this season.

The Britons did just that at Kresge Gymnasium Tuesday night, shaking off the third and fourth sets, to finish Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rival Saint Mary's College in five sets (25-17, 25-22, 21-25, 25-27, 16-14).

The victory moves Albion to .500 overall at 6-6 and against MIAA rivals at 2-2. And the Britons are undefeated in MIAA contests on their home court.

"We have done a lot of learning over the last two weeks and our team finally believes it can remain calm when the match is on the line," Albion Coach Kristin de St. Aubin said. "They understand the need to be confident and take risks in those situations.

"Kresge is a great home court advantage," de St. Aubin added. "Our fans are always great. We love playing at home."

To get the win, de St. Aubin said the Britons executed the game plan and took care of little things like keep the ball off the floor. Four Britons reached double figures in digs, with first-year setter Grace VanDorn collecting 28 and Rachel Zawodny adding 20. Libero Monica Shuk received the majority of the serves and finished with 16 digs.

Kaitlyn Gilchrist was involved in many rotations, and she finished with 13 kills and 13 digs.

Marie Pregenzer knocked down a team-high 14 kills and three blocks. Kate Winter also had 11 kills for the Britons.

Albion will go in search of another MIAA win Friday night at Alma College.
