GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Middle blockers Marie Pregenzer and Taylor Rosenthal combined for 19 kills Friday night as the Albion College volleyball team tested Calvin College, the top-ranked team in Division III.
Calvin won the match 25-16, 25-19, 25-22.
Albion was effective attacking in the middle. Rosenthal finished with a .391 hitting percentage (11-2-23) and Pregenzer hit .500 (8-1-14) and she added three service aces. Setter Grace VanDorn dished out 22 assists and collected seven digs, and libero Monica Shuk came up with 11 digs.
Calvin started quickly, hitting .519 (14-0-27) in the first set.
Pregenzer served two of her aces as Albion raced out to a 4-1 lead in the third set. The Britons led as many as five, 17-12, but Calvin chipped away to forge a tie at 19. The Knights scored four in a row to build a 23-20 lead and it finished the match with a kill by Anna Kamp.
Albion (10-7 overall and 3-2 against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rivals) travels to Hope College on Wednesday, Oct. 10, for a MIAA match.
