Andrew Bill and Cassandra Vince led Albion College to a sweep of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association's Runner of the Week awards.
Bill, a sophomore from Berkley, Mich., was the top overall runner as the Britons defeated the regionally ranked teams from Case Western Reserve University and John Carroll University in the Sudeck Sundown Classic. Bill completed the 6K course in 19:12.3 to finish 21 seconds ahead of the runner-up.
"The original plan was to go with Case Western's top runner, but he wasn't in the race so I took over," Bill said.
Albion coach Derick Lawrence added, "Andrew took the lead after the 1K mark and never looked back. He looked strong the entire way. This was his first collegiate win and a great confidence booster to start the season."
Vince, a junior from Amherst, Ohio, who prepped at Marion L. Steele High School, set the Sudeck Sundown Classic meet record when she completed the 4K course in 14:43. That was good for a 32 second margin over Case Western Reserve University's Danielle Kulpins, the individual runner up.
"Cassie did a great job of getting out from the start of the race and pushing the pace," Lawrence said. "This was a great rust-buster for her and fun to see her get out there and compete."
Next up for Albion is a Sept. 15 date in the Spartan Invitational at the Forest Akers East Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich.
