ALBION, Mich. – Center fielder Riley Stesiak enjoyed his best day of the season at the plate – ripping five doubles and a triple – as Albion College split a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association baseball doubleheader with Trine University at Champions Stadium.
Albion (20-17 overall, 15-11 MIAA) has secured a berth in the MIAA Tournament and its first 20-win season since 2007 when it finished 22-18.
Game One: Albion 4, Trine 3
Justin Charron hit a RBI single in the first and Stesiak hit a RBI double in the second as Albion took a 2-0 lead.
Albion extended the lead to 3-0 on Stesiak's RBI triple in the fourth.
Trine scored twice in the fifth and once in the sixth to forge a 3-3 tie.
Mitch Shedlowsky (7-2) allowed three hits and four walks with four strikeouts in his complete game performance. His seven victories moves him in a tie with five others for second-most in a season at Albion.
Game Two: Trine 8, Albion 6 in 10 innings
Albion was unable to hold a 5-3 lead in the ninth as three errors helped Trine score two times to force an extra inning.
Relief pitcher Brett Chesla retired Trine first two batters in the 10th, but Trine rallied for three runs as the Thunder hit a single, drew a walk, slugged a triple, hit another single and advanced to first on a wild pitch when the catcher didn't receive the third strike.
Albion is scheduled to complete the regular season with Sunday games at Trine's Jannen Field.
Joe and Julie Serra have given a $5 million leadership gift to launch a fundraising initiative to make two dreams a reality at Albion College. The first is a newly expanded fitness and student activity facility at the site of the current Dow Recreation and Wellness Center. The second is a new or renovated competition facility for the volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball that currently call Kresge Gymnasium home.
The College is continuing to raise funds in support of both projects. To learn more, call 517/629-0446 or email email@example.com.
